I really appreciate it when game developers know exactly what they want to produce in a game, and mince no words in telling you about what a game is and is not trying to be. I get that feeling when I read over the Everspace Kickstarter, and if you are intro “arcady” space sims with lots of action, Everspace might be for you. It is NOT trying to be Elite or Star Citizen, something that the Everspace Kickstarter strongly hints at without naming names.
Everspace is being produced by ROCKFISH Games (apparently the capitalization is important) as a fast paced hyper-action space combat rogue-like game, with a simple goal of reaching your destination. Of course, being a rogue-like means that the path and the obstacles will be different each time you try. The rogue-like elements, such as the randomized game world and permadeath are important to note because they are actually woven in the game as part of the story’s progression. When you die, the game world changes and you start again. However, instead of feeling like punishment, the game rewards you by allowing some of your unlocks and upgrades to pass over. Additionally, a new fragment of the story may be revealed to you. Speaking of the story, Everspace is hoping to give you a deep and non-linear story to explore over the many game sessions that you will run.
There are a lot of very cool features being touted in the Everspace Kickstarter that are worth reading over. Tech trees, crafting, multiple tactics to use when engaging or avoiding enemies, resource collection, collecting blueprints, exploration, lots of different enemy ships to face, and so on. And I have to say, OMG the game looks simply amazing thanks to the Unreal Engine 4. Check out the pre-alpha gameplay video below to see what I mean. Oh, and the game is being specifically designed to run using mouse and keyboard, and ROCKFISH’s goal is to develop a flight system that rivals and perhaps even surpasses the control scheme of the now legendary Freelancer. All in all, Everspace sounds and looks like it will be one amazingly sexy game!
As always, testing is what we are interested in, and the Everspace Kickstarter does indeed have you covered. Beta access starts at the €35 tier, and alpha access starts at the €50 tier. I actually think I might back the Everspace Kickstarter myself because it looks so damned awesome. Check it out!
